Fashionspeak Fridays: New York City Ballet: Choreography and Couture
For more than ten years New York City Ballet has brought together some of the most celebrated talents in fashion and dance with its annual Fall Fashion Gala. Join author Marc Happel, and photographer Pari Dukovic for an evening discussing New York City Ballet: Choreography and Couture a book from Rizzoli about a decade of the artistic vision of nearly 30 designer and choreographer collaborations that have premiered at the iconic event, as well as the impeccable craftsmanship of the NYCB Costume Shop which executed these couture stage designs.
From Thom Browne’s distinctively tailored suits tweaked to accommodate the movement of dancers to Iris van Herpen’s articulated reflective carapaces which radically altered the dancers’ form, the evening will highlight the process of creation with the designers’ original costume drawings, the inspiration and technical accommodation required by these exceptional collaborations, and how the photography captured the art of fashion and dance. Marc Happel has served as Director of Costumes at New York City Ballet since 2006 and has overseen the creation of the Fall Fashion Gala costumes since the event’s inception. Pari Dukovic is an award-winning portrait, reportage, and fashion photographer whose work has been published in books and major outlets globally including The New Yorker, Time, GQ, and Harper’s Bazaar.
Books will be available for purchase. Dance Fashion is highly encouraged!
