A Sense of Place — The American Art Colonies Selections from the Permanent Collection
In The Grand Gallery
Continuing through February 9
Continuing the celebrations of our 125th Anniversary season and expanding the spirit of “In a New Light: American Impressionism 1870–1940 | Works from the Bank of America Collection,” “A Sense of Place” highlights works from the National Arts Club’s permanent collection that reflect the significance of the art colonies and regional schools established throughout the United States in the early decades of the 20th century. The power of shared ideas and the ongoing discovery of the diverse scenic wonder of the country’s landscape served to infuse an authentic national voice in American art. Included are works by National Arts Club Artists Life Members who found support and inspiration in Old Lyme and Cos Cob, Connecticut; Woodstock, New York; New Hope, Pennsylvania and smaller enclaves throughout the East Coast. Also on view is a selection of paintings from American artists established at the Giverny Colony in France from the late 19th century through World War I.

Thor Rinden: A Retrospective In The East Gallery January 8 -31
The National Arts Club is pleased to present a retrospective exhibit of the work of Brooklyn artist Thor Rinden (1937-2009). Rinden’s work, both abstract and representational, is characterized by ingeniously constructed forms and sumptuous color. The exhibit highlights the artist’s three distinctive styles. Rinden’s “woven” paintings interweave strips of canvas to create intricate, quilt-like patterns. His “slab” paintings embed smaller canvasses within larger ones, playing with color and dimension in highly original ways. Finally, Rinden’s figurative paintings and sculptures capture the bright, hard-edged beauty and whimsy of their subjects. Thor Rinden’s work is in the permanent collections of many museums and institutions, including the Arkansas Museum of Fine Arts, the Oklahoma City Museum of Art, the Fisher Museum of USC, the Smith College Museum of Art, the University of Iowa Stanley Museum of Art, and the Center for Brooklyn History.

The “painterly” art was recently done on location in various Havana, Cuba neighborhoods, mostly near the Vedado and Old City. |
