Picasso: Painting the Blue Period
[Fine Arts] Shedding new light on Pablo Picasso’s Blue Period, the cross-border collaboration of the Art Gallery of Ontario and The Phillips Collection has created a new model for curatorial practice. Combining art historical scholarship with information gleaned from advanced scientific studies of the three Blue Period paintings in their respective collections, the two institutions are mounting an exhibition in 2021-2022 with a focused narrative on Picasso’s artistic development as he moved between the cities of Madrid, Barcelona, and Paris in 1901-1904. Speaking with Gary Tinterow, Director of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Dr. Susan Behrends Frank, Curator, The Phillips Collection, and Kenneth Brummel, Associate Curator, Modern Art, Art Gallery of Ontario, explain how their seven-year research project has transformed scholars’ understanding of one the most celebrated episodes of 20th century modernism.
This program is presented in partnership with the Council for Canadian American Relations and the Embassy of Canada, as part of a series exploring artists and their work based on select traveling exhibitions.
