Founded in 1881 by a consortium of nine American universities in collaboration with leading businessmen, the American School of Classical Studies at Athens is the preeminent venue for research concerning the Greek world and areas spanning the Aegean. The oldest and largest U.S. overseas research institution, it cooperates with two hundred institutions and thousands of students and scholars. Responsible for American archaeology in its nation by the Hellenic Ministry of Culture and Tourism, ASCSA encourages a multidisciplinary approach entailing investigation, preservation, and promotion of Greece’s rich heritage from antiquity to the present day.
With the goal of bringing diverse people together, the National Arts Club considers itself privileged to arrange lectures related to our shared humanity. We believe that knowledge of antiquity’s Hellas is fundamental for comprehending the historic flow of civilizations, for analyzing the role artistic beauty plays in our lives, as well as for understanding today’s political disputes concerning the very meaning of democracy. Internationally renowned speakers at this gala celebration are Mary Lefkowitz and John McK. Camp. Also featured will be The Mediterranean, composed by Stephen Pekar, and Isadora Duncan's Tanagra Figures, staged by Lori Belilove.
