Lucy by the Sea — An Evening with Elizabeth Strout
[Literary] With her trademark spare, crystalline prose, Pulitzer Prize winner Elizabeth Strout follows the indomitable heroine of My Name Is Lucy Barton through the early days of the pandemic in her new novel, Lucy by the Sea. Uprooted from her life in Manhattan, Lucy is bundled away to a small town in Maine by her ex-husband and on-again, off-again friend, William. The novel traces Lucy, William, and their complex past together in a house nestled near the moody, swirling sea, and captures the fear and struggles that come with isolation, as well as the hope, peace, and possibilities those long, quiet days can inspire. At the heart of the book are the deep human connections that unite us even when we’re apart. Strout has been praised for her “radical empathy,” and in Lucy by the Sea her voice is infused with “intimate, fragile, desperate humanness.” (The Washington Post)
