FashionSpeak Fridays: Fashioning Bollywood Friday, April 21 7:00 PM The Hindi film industry, among the most prolific in the world, has delighted audiences for decades with its colorful, exquisite and sometimes startling costumes. Join Clare Wilkinson, author of Fashioning Bollywood: The Making and Meaning of Hindi Film Costume (Bloomsbury) for an in-depth evening exploring historic and fantastical Hindi film costume, followed by dance lessons with Beauty and a Beat Dance. Clare Wilkinson earned her PhD in Anthropology from the University of Pennsylvania. Her research since has focused on art, craft, and media production, with a particular focus on costume and craft in the Hindi film industry (Bollywood) of Mumbai. In addition to many academic articles, she has written two books and is co-editor of a recent volume on the anthropology of craft. She is Associate Professor of Anthropology at Washington State University Vancouver. Known for their epic flash mobs in Times Square, Beauty and a Beat Dance is a Manhattan-based dance academy inspired by Bollywood cinema.
