Then & Now: A Memoir

We are thrilled to open the new season with Barbara Cook, who will grace the Grand Gallery once again, this time with her new book Then & Now. She was awarded a Medal of Honor in Music and Theatre by The National Arts Club in 2007. In 2012 President Obama honored her talent at the 36th Kennedy Center Honors Gala.  
   A legend of the American theater, Ms. Cook burst onto the scene in the 1950s to become Broadway’s leading ingénue in such roles as Cunegonde in Candide, Amalia Balash in She Loves Me, and her career defining, Tony Award-winning role as the original Marian the Librarian in The Music Man.  But in the late 1960s, Ms. Cook’s extraordinary talent onstage was threatened by debilitating depression and alcoholism, forcing her to step away from the limelight. Emerging from the shadows in the early 1970s, she reinvented herself as the country’s leading concert and cabaret artist.
   Then & Now details her magical and turbulent life, covers the extraordinary working relationships she shared with many of the key composers, musicians, actors, and performers of the late twentieth century, including Leonard Bernstein, Jerry Bock and Elaine Stritch, onto the present day, where she has established herself as one of America’s greatest singers and actors.
