Armada: Joe Zucker - Works on Paper
May 2 - 28

Opening Reception:
Monday, May 2, 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM

W. H. Auden observed “how the sea represents a “state of barbaric vagueness and disorder out of which civilization has emerged.”
As pirates, whalers, and slave traders recur in his undulating imagery, the artist Joe Zucker has long engaged with the sea’s energy and menace. “Armada” presents a forty-year survey of Zucker’s works on paper and the first to focus on his images of the sea.
Declared by Chuck Close to be “one of America’s most innovative artists . . . consistently for over four decades,” Zucker was born on the South Side of Chicago in 1941 and graduated from the School of the Art Institute in 1964, returning for his MFA in 1966. After two decades in New York City, in 1980 he relocated his home and studio to the East End of Long Island. Exhibited regularly at Mary Boone Gallery and David Nolan Gallery, Zucker’s work is in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, The Whitney Museum of American Art, and many other contemporary institutions.
