John Irving, the novelist and screenwriter, has written fourteen novels, nine of which have been international bestsellers. The World According to Garp, which won the National Book Award, was John Irving’s fourth novel. Five of his novels, including Garp and The Hotel New Hampshire, have been made into films; in 2000, he won the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay for The Cider House Rules. Born in Exeter, New Hampshire, but an international writer—his novels have been translated into more than thirty-five languages—John Irving lives in Toronto. He is at work on a fifteenth novel—a ghost story, titled Darkness as a Bride.

Speakers for the event include authors Edmund White and Amy Hempel, as well as
Jonathan Karp, president and publisher of Simon & Schuster.
