on view in the Grand Gallery DTR Modern Gallery presents Clarence James November 28 - December 17
A self-taught artist working in Washington DC, Clarence James brings his graffiti style into vibrant canvases using acrylic, aerosol, pastel, Krink markers, and found materials. Along with inspiration from Black Artists like Jacob Lawrence, Romare Bearden, and Kerry James Marshall, James takes on portraiture identity and communicates his experience in Basquiat-like hieroglyphics. |
Please note that the subsequent exhibition THE NEW AGE OF ANXIETY has been postponed. The Grand Gallery will instead feature a seasonal holiday exhibition from our collection.

on view in the East and West Galleries Ferment: Metamorphoses and Reflections. CYFEST-14 December 6 - January 3, 2023
CYFEST-14: Ferment examines the theme of fermentation through the dual lenses of art and science. Fermentation in the conventional sense is a technological process in the food industry. However, if we give it some thought, practically everything that happens over time – to animate, inanimate and even strictly material objects – falls under this definition. In the exhibition, artists explore fermentation’s versatility both as a biological process and in its more extensive metaphorical meaning. This exhibition brings together artists-practicing different media including paintings, drawings, prints, photography, video, new media, and interactive installations – who are interested in evoking a wide range of responses to contemporary cultural and historical context and social environment. Leonardo Journal, published in partnership with MIT Press, is dedicating its December 2022 Special issue to this theme in conjunction with 2022 CYLAND Media Art Lab 14th international festival of media art CYFEST. The exhibition is organized by CYLAND Media Art Lab in collaboration with the Kolodzei Art Foundation. Click here for more information.

Will Barnet - An Anniversary Tribute Works on Paper, 1950s and 60s
On view through January 6, 2023
On the tenth anniversary of his death, the National Arts Club celebrates the life and creativity of Artist Life Member Will Barnet (1911 - 2012). An extremely dynamic artist, Barnet changed his style significantly throughout his career. His earliest graphic works capture the social and economic despair which resulted from the Great Depression, which was followed by his more abstract works of the 1950s and 60s and culminated in his figurative elegant style from his later career. This intimate exhibit focuses on rarely seen works on paper from the 1950s and 60s. Moving from representation to abstraction, Barnet achieves a synthesis in which the two attain a precise balance. The late 1940s and early 50s demonstrate a lyrical and atmospheric compression of figures in the natural environment surrounding them, By the mid 1950s the pictographic symbols and patterns evocative of the Indian Space artists brought a realignment to his imagery. The transformation of natural forms into pure abstraction represented a new direction in the 1960s. Barnet continued to challenge himself throughout his long career, never abandoning his process of simplification which culminated in an inevitable return to abstraction in his last decade. Will Barnet remains an inspiration as an artist whose values and intellect allowed him to stand alone, escaping classification. Although his work has been extensively exhibited and published, the full range of his creativity is yet to be revealed.
