Tuesday, May 21
6:30 PM

Illustrated lecture

Wilderstein is one of the Hudson Valley’s great country seats. John (Wint) Aldrich will share his account of the estate owners, the Suckley family; Wilderstein’s remarkable architecture and the story of how the estate was saved. He also will relate first-hand information about his cousin, Daisy Suckley, Wilderstein’s last resident. A confidante of FDR, her private letters exchanged with Roosevelt were discovered in a black battered suitcase at Wilderstein after her death in 1991.
John Winthrop Aldrich is a Livingston descendant and member of the tenth generation of his family to occupy their ancestral country estate, Rokeby. He served for many years as NYS Deputy Commissioner for Historic Preservation and has been an influential lifelong advocate for the protection of natural and historic resources.  Mr. Aldrich was a major force in establishing the Hudson River National Historic Landmark District, the largest such district in the US.
