FashionSpeak Fridays:  Guo Pei - Couture Beyond

Friday, May 10
7:00 PM

Illustrated lecture, discussion

Join us for an evening exploring the masterful oeuvre of Chinese couturière Guo Pei with fashion historian Carmela Spinelli. Born during China’s Cultural Revolution, Guo Pei’s imagination was fueled by stories of a more opulent era. Spinelli introduces Guo Pei’s breathtaking fusion of ancient tradition, mythology and modernity throughout her career, culminating in becoming the first Chinese designer invited to join the Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture in Paris.
Guo Pei became known to Western audiences in 2015, with her inclusion in the exhibition “China: Through the Looking Glass” at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and her now-iconic imperial yellow cape worn by Rihanna.
Spinelli is the former chair of fashion and accessory design at SCAD. An award-winning fashion/ design professional, she lectures on fashion history and business. Prior to joining SCAD, she served as associate chair of the department of fashion design at Parsons and is the recipient of the Lisa Taylor Fellowship from Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum.

Free and open to the public. Seating is first come, first-served. An RSVP is required for this event. Please email [email protected]
