Studio in the Street:
Symbols - Totems - Cyphers

April 29 - June 14

In the early 1980s, New York City vibrated with an alternative art scene that played itself out on the streets and vacant lots throughout the city. A wave of talent took to creating an exhilarating intersection of art and life. As the scene moved from the periphery of the art world to its center, these artists retained the energy of the street while creating a new and dynamic vision. This important overview of Street Art will feature works by Keith Haring and Richard Hambleton as well Scot Borofsky, Ken Hiratsuka, Angel Ortiz, Robin Van Arsdol, Bob Dombrowski, Kevin Wendall (FA-Q), and Paolo Buggiani.

The National Arts Club is grateful for the contributions of Scot Borofsky and the Painting Center in organizing this exhibition.

Iké Udé and The Intangible Aspects of Fashion

April 29 – May 31

Reception: Thursday, May 2, 6:00-8:00 PM

Iké Udé is best known for his stunning conceptual photographs with saturated color that explore the presentation of cultural identity, stylistic integrity, and gender.  He is a performance artist, an author, a publisher, a photographer, as well as a dandy and aesthete.
Many images in this exhibition are self-portraits with a sartorial focus on presentation as a provocative cocktail of styles and eras.
Udé chooses to explore a world of dualities as both photographer and performer,  artist and spectator, an individual and everyman. He has a long relationship with the world of celebrity and fashion through his iconic portraits and books. He is the author of Style File, Sartorial Anarchy, and founder of aRude Magazine. He has been featured on the Vanity Fair International Best Dressed List many times.

Marcia Grostein: Brighton Beach Project -  The World as it Should Be

May 1 - 31

Marcia Grostein’s Brighton Beach Project stands as a testament to the possibility of harmonious coexistence between diverse populations. Comprised of intimate yet unabashed beachgoer portraits, the series reveals a rare intermingling of races, religions, relationships, and body types that characterizes the ocean-side community of Brighton Beach. Together, these photographs present an alternative to the divisiveness currently propagated by many socio-political groups and leaders.
Born in Sao Paulo and based in New York, Marcia Grostein’s illustrious career spans several decades. Her work has been in featured in international solo and group exhibitions, and can be found in numerous international private and public collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and MoMA/PS1.

SaySay.Love: Water

April 29 - May 31

Members' Reception: Tuesday, April 30,  6:00-8:00 PM

Art uses water as a mirror for the interplay between abstraction and reality. Whether at rest or in motion, colorless or iridescent – the nature of water triggers emotions.
In his photographs, SaySay.Love celebrates the beauty of water and everything that hides and is reflected in it. Movements and colors are juxtaposed, meet, attract, or fall apart. SaySay.Love amplifies the moment in which he changes light or shadow with the possibilities of iPhones; he turns on garish or pastel-colored elements; he changes reality like a painter until it corresponds to his experienced moment.
SaySay.Love was born in 1962 in Berlin and lives in both Berlin and Cape Town.
