Tuesday, April 30
Discussion/ Live Performance/ Q&A
Talley Beatty (1918–1995) is considered one of the greatest African American choreographers. An extraordinary dancer, he studied ballet with Katherine Dunham and became a member of her company. He went on to create works for his own company and other leading troupes including Alvin Ailey and Philadanco, all of which center on the social issues and experiences of African Americans. Eloise Anderson and Delores Browne, both of whom danced with Beatty, will discuss his work.
Mourner’s Bench will be performed by Clarence Brooks, Director of Dance at Florida Atlantic University. Mr. Brooks has performed at Jacob’s Pillow, Spoleto Festival/USA, Paris Opera, The Joyce Theater, and the American Dance Festival. Recent guest appearances include Sokolow Theatre Dance Ensemble, and the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company.
