Jerry Uelsmann: Alchemy and Imagery
September 28 - October 4

Jerry Uelsmann is an iconic figure of Mid-Century American photography. His innovative use of photographic techniques in the 1950s and 1960s foreshadowed the era of computer technologies today. Using the available darkroom technology of the time, which he pushed to the limit, he created prints using multiple exposures, and in integrating the images, he used up to twelve enlargers at one time. The finished project is the dreamlike, surreal, unified image in the blended photographs he creates.
Mr. Uelsmann has attained the status of a respected elder in the archives of American Photography but retains the clear eye and creative force of his youthful endeavors. He understands the draw of his earlier work and continues to photograph and print, to invent and explore today’s world in his chosen medium.
Mr. Uelsmann is a retired professor.

Rodrigo Franzão - KATHARSIS
September 28 - October 24

The National Arts Club is pleased to present the New York debut exhibition of Brazilian artist Rodrigo Franzão. Born in Sao Paulo in 1982, Franzão is one of the most dynamic and provocative artists among Brazil’s new generation of talent.
Enlightened by an early background in literature and communications, the work of Rodrigo Franzão reveals an incantatory discourse between the artist, his vision and his uninhibited involvement with found materials. KATHARSIS transforms this dialogue into an exploration of the human form moving from aspects of beauty to biological condition. The grounding force of Franzão’s line combined with the vibrant play of geometric abstraction gives KATHARSIS a rhythmic power. The work is further enhanced by the artist’s facile use of mixed media and a brilliant sense of color - an echoing pulse of his native country.
KATHARSIS comes to New York following the success of Franzão’s breakthrough show, INVOLUNTARY EXCLUSION, presented at the Museu Supremo in the Tribunal de Justica in Brasilia. Later this season he will exhibit in Los Angeles and the Ukraine.
