Dancers After Dark with Jordan Matter

Tuesday, January 17
8:00 PM

Dancers are dreamers. Many have left the comfort zone of a familiar life to pursue an ambition fraught with impossible odds of success. They are the inspiring embodiment of an intense commitment to a life’s passion.
In describing celebrated photographer Jordan Matter’s Dancers Among Us project, The New York Times reported, “in Jordan Matter’s photos, dancers make all the world their stage.” Following this joyful, New York Times bestselling exploration of dancers leaping, spinning, lifting, and kicking in the midst of daily life, Matter presents a stunning collection of dancers and performers posing naked at night in Dancers After Dark. For this “celebration of strength, adventure, risk and fearless beauty” (Essence.com), Matter shot more than 300 performers in over 400 locations ranging from Paris' Notre Dame to New York’s Times Square. The shooting took place over the course of 200 nights, in all weather. The resulting images capture the grace, vulnerability, and passion of the human spirit.
This evening Mr. Matter is joined by four talented dancers who appear in Dancers After Dark—Sean Aaron Carmon (Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater), Lloyd Knight (The Martha Graham Dance Company), Annmaria Mazzini (The Mazzini Dance Collective), and Reina Trifunovic (The Juilliard School)—to discuss and share breathtaking images from the collection and screen a brief documentary featuring behind-the-scenes footage.
After the event, join us for a book signing.
