Piano Jazz with Christian Sands
Monday, April 11
Jazz returns to the Grand Gallery with an evening of solo piano jazz with emerging young artist Christian Sands.
A protégé of the late jazz legend Dr. Billy Taylor (whose image is proudly on display in our Portrait Gallery), Christian Sands is a rising young pianist who has collaborated with Wynton Marsalis and a long list of jazz luminaries including Terrance Blanchard, Bill Evans, Oscar Peterson, Wycliffe Gordon, among many others.
Sands has already received three Grammy nominations for his Latin jazz recordings, and he’s made the rounds of the major jazz festivals and clubs. The renowned bassist Christian McBride took notice and invited him to join his ensemble Inside Straight, just back from a European tour in March.
In honor of Jazz Appreciation Month, Christian Sands brings his piano prowess to the intimate Grand Gallery for a special set of standards including favorites by Kern, Peterson, and Rollins. Sands is also an enthusiastic composer and advocate of the genre, and he weaves some of his own sounds into his evening at the NAC.
