The Verona Quartet
Tuesday, March 15
8:00 PM
The string quartet residency program at The Juilliard School is a sensitive barometer when it comes to identifying and promoting young string quartet talent, and it has proven itself once again with the pick for this year’s Graduate String Quartet in Residence. The Verona Quartet formed just two years ago at Indiana University, and they have made quick work of rising to the top of the heap, having also won the high-profile Concert Artists Guild Competition here in New York in 2015.
For their National Arts Club appearance, the Verona Quartet has chosen canvases by two geniuses of the genre: Felix Mendelssohn and Béla Bartók. The second of Mendelssohn’s Op. 44 quartets finds the composer in the middle of his string quartet output (leaning toward the later side), and in the middle of his life (and leaning toward the later side here as well). Mendelssohn’s softer edges offer a stark contrast to the angular, more forward-thinking sounds of Bartók’s String Quartet No. 5.
The Verona Quartet promises a warm and inviting evening of intimate music-making in the Grand Gallery.
