Visual presentation and discussion

John Carpenter, the Mary Griggs Burke Curator of Japanese Art at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the author of The Poetry of Nature: Edo Paintings from the Fishbein Bender Collection will discuss highlights of the Japanese hanging-scroll paintings, ceramics and woodblock prints of the Edo period (17th to 19th centuries) collected by Dr. Estelle Bender and her late husband, T. Richard Fishbein, currently on exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.  The collection, the subject of his book, is especially strong in showing animals in landscape settings and in contemporary ceramic decorative arts complementing the earlier paintings and prints.  The decorative arts presented will illustrate the unique intertwinement of poetry and pictorial arts that is fundamental to Japanese tradition.
