Catharine Lorillard Wolfe Art Club: The 118th Annual Open Juried Exhibition

November 28 - December 17

Catharine Lorillard Wolfe (1828-1887) was a prominent New York philanthropist and art collector, and the only woman among the 106 founders of The Metropolitan Museum of Art. In addition to bequeathing her painting collection to the museum, Ms. Wolfe left an endowment to Grace Church in Manhattan to promote “women’s work.”
For over 60 years, the Club has been welcomed by The National Arts Club in furthering that goal and hosting the Annual Open Juried Exhibition. This event provides opportunities for members and non-members alike to show their work in the heart of the world’s art capital, New York City. As part of the exhibition, over $8,000 in awards are made each year.

Wood Works: John Cross

December 19 - January 7, 2017

Opening Reception:
Tuesday, December 20, 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM

While John Cross invariably describes what he does as “whittling”, eminent critics call his work…”woodcarving in the finest folk art tradition.” Unassuming in subject matter, they are deceptively simple at first glance. To the discerning eye, however, the sophistication of each piece is soon evident. Sharply defined, stripped of extraneous detail, these carvings create an impression of such strength and solidity that one can forget that the figures are only 12” to 18” tall.
The National Arts Club is proud to present an exhibition by this original and striking American Master. Works by Cross can be found in the collections of the Smithsonian and The Museum of American Folk Art. In New York he has exhibited at David Findlay Gallery, Jay Johnson Gallery and Borough Hall, Brooklyn. In 2012, he was commissioned by Absolute Vodka to create an artwork, Absolute Cross, for their ongoing ad series.
