Hieronymus Bosch: Contemporary Artists
Celebrating the Master

October 3 - 29

Opening Reception:

Thursday, October 13, 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM

On the 500th anniversary of the death of the Northern Renaissance painter Hieronymus Bosch, institutions around the world are commemorating his contribution to art. The National Arts Club invites select contemporary artists to pay homage to the master through their own works, presenting their views on his out-of-this-world narratives.
Bosch, born in the 1450s, became one of the great artists of the Dutch Renaissance and, though virtually nothing is known about his life, his works continued to inspire art across the 20th century and into the present. The Surrealists deemed him a proto-Surrealists; his fantastical depictions and outrageous visions were strange for his time period and remain so today. By invoking details and recalling stylistic choices, by reflecting on his religious and political context, by seeking his darkest depictions, this group of contemporary artists remind us of how we can continue to explore the artistic canon and through new works bring a great master back to life.

Jill Krutick: The Balance of Texture & Movement

October 3 - 29

Opening Reception:

Wednesday, October 5, 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM

Jill Krutick is an artist who focuses on capturing colors, movement, shapes and light. Using oil on canvas as the primary medium, Krutick makes textured works, which strive to exhibit “balance.”
Krutick achieves balance through the precise placement of color and use of texture. By focusing on capturing raw, natural elements – such as terrain, water, sun and sky -- and equalizing for the contrast between light and dark, Krutick seizes movement through a variety of textures. She selects a few colors and a base texture from which to build to begin a journey of exploration. Layering over a period of weeks and months is the key to Krutick’s ability to accentuate the “map” of texture and ultimately reveal each painting’s potential.
The freedom to blend, build or add color to create depth or flutter on the surface adds an element of chance that stimulates Krutick’s creativity and enhances her connection to a tactile interpretation of the forces around her.

Betsy Cain, Marcus Kenney, Cedric Smith

October 17 - 28

This exhibition showcases Betsy Cain, Marcus Kenney, and Cedric Smith, and presents major recent bodies of work by three diverse artists who have called Savannah home for decades. The artwork creates conversations around representations of place—in particular place as connected to Savannah, Georgia, and the American South. Cain, Kenney, and Smith’s works each offer multiple layers of meaning and interpretation, proving that there is no singular “sense of place” or vernacular context that can be blanketly applied to artists from the same region. Southern artists and artists from Savannah respond to the many evolving characterizations attached to one’s local identity, and are just as complex and multivalent as the geographies they inhabit.

This exhibition is presented by Visit Savannah, Savannah Economic Development Authority, Telfair Museums and
The Grey of Savannah, Georgia.
