Contemporary Figures:
Form Beyond Function

September 6 - October 1

Opening Reception:
Thursday, September 8, 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM

The history of the human figure is all but inseparable from the history of Western art but unlike manifestations of landscape, the human figure has often become an anonymous presence in art and in some movements, an anachronism. Fortunately, the essential need to create and explore ourselves has remained indispensable. As human and artistic needs evolve so does the representation of the figure in art.
This exhibition celebrates the work of a diverse group of artists who over the past sixty years have found a sense of discovery, delight and possibility in the human figure. Whether the exploration involves the anatomical, the psychological or the poetic, each reveals something unique and compelling about the human form and what it means to be alive today.
Included are works by Lynne Augeri, Will Barnet, Romare Bearden, Larry Rivers, Duane Michals, Jose Ortega, Gail Rothschild, Kyle Staver, George Towne, Dillon Utter and Timur York.

From The Permanent Collection: Casey McKee - Corporate Warfare

September 6 - October 1

Born in Phoenix, Arizona, photographer Casey McKee has spent most of his professional career in Berlin where his unique process of combining photographic emulsion with oil painting has been received enthusiastically by critics and collectors. Mainly self-taught, McKee has developed into a master technician, allowing his method to effortlessly enhance subject and feeling.
The National Arts Club is fortunate to hold thirteen original prints from McKee’s best known series, Corporate Warfare (2005). Using the business suit as a costume, McKee’s images juxtapose violence with professional deportment to portray the brutal psychological warfare of the corporate world.
Provocative and humorous, McKee’s images are compelling in both their execution and their contemporary narrative.
