Fierce: A History of Leopard Print

Friday, March 8
7:00 PM

Illustrated lecture, discussion, performance

Over centuries leopards were hunted close to extinction for their fur, but beginning in 18th-century Europe, leopard print textiles began to replace the exotic skins. With its African origin and inspiration from a powerful animal, leopard pattern had long been associated with exoticism and erotic freedom.
Change your spots and join Jo Weldon, author of Fierce: The History of Leopard Print, for an evening exploring this prized pattern. Weldon has lectured on this topic in North America and Europe, and her project has been celebrated in the Financial Times, CNN, and The New York Times. As the founder and headmistress of the New York School of Burlesque, she offers classes and tours internationally to teach and perform. She also combines her professional experience as an adult entertainer with an understanding of women’s issues and has lobbied at the U.N. for their inclusion in human rights initiatives.  A burlesque performance will accompany the evening.
Leopard print fashion is highly encouraged. Books will be available for purchase.
