Film screening and discussion
La Chana is a 2016 documentary directed by Lucija Stojevic and produced by Deirdre Towers. With depth, humor and pathos, it celebrates a self-taught Gypsy, a flamenco dancer who in the 1960s rose to international stardom, including an appearance in Peter Sellers’s The Bobo and then vanished from the public eye. This film, shown in 90 festivals on five continents, gives us a window into the irrepressible spirit of this artist with an uncanny gift for rhythm.
La Chana has won numerous awards including the 2018 Gaudí and Feroz Awards for Best Documentary.
Deirdre Towers, producer of Dance on Camera Festival 1994-2012 and professor of flamenco history at Institute of Spanish Arts, will introduce La Chana and engage in a Q&A after the screening.
