Catharine Lorillard Wolfe Art Club: 122nd Annual Open Juried Exhibition

January 8 - 25

Reception: Friday, January 18,  6:00-8:00 PM

Catharine Lorillard Wolfe (1828-1887) was a prominent New York philanthropist and art collector, and the only woman among the 106 founders of The Metropolitan Museum of Art. In addition to bequeathing her painting collection to the museum, Ms. Wolfe left an endowment to Grace Church in Manhattan to promote “women’s work.”
For over 60 years, the Club has been welcomed by The National Arts Club in furthering that goal and hosting the Annual Open Juried Exhibition. This event provides opportunities for members and non-members alike to show their work in the heart of the world’s art capital, New York City. As part of the exhibition, over $8,000 in awards are made each year.

Drawings of Gaston Lachaise

December 17 - January 25

Gaston Lachaise was an American Modernist sculptor for whom the act of drawing was of utmost importance throughout his career. His reliefs grace Rockefeller Center, his sculptures are in the finest collections of American art, and his drawings continue to amaze. Lachaise attended the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris and at the age of about 20 followed an American woman to the United States, where he sought to create “a new Venus.”
The exhibition will show the development of the artist from his early drawings, including lyrical ink figures and geometric crayon heads, to his enormous, exuberant works in ink of ‘Woman,’ inspired mostly by his muse, model and eventual wife, Isabel Dutaud Nagle, but also by burlesque dancers of the 1920s and 30s. Making their first appearance will be a selection of exquisite, never-before exhibited sketches, as well as a rare self-portrait of the artist drawn on Hotel Brevoort stationery.

White: Elizabeth O'Reilly

January 7 - February 1

White as a color. How does white work as a color? In this body of work, Elizabeth O’Reilly looks closely at white in sunlight and white in shadow. Painted on site from locations on the North Fork of Long Island to cabins in Maine, O’Reilly’s work is based on her close observation of the natural world.
Irish-born but Brooklyn-based since 1986, O’Reilly received her B.Ed from The National University of Ireland and an MFA from Brooklyn College. Her work has been reviewed extensively in Art in America, The New York Times and Art News among others. She has received numerous awards including a Pollock Krasner Foundation grant. A documentary on her work, An Artist Abroad, was shown on network TV in Ireland. O’Reilly’s work is found in many public and corporate collections both in the United States and abroad.
