KEN HIRATSUKA - ONELINE PLANET, 2018
Sculpture, Drawings and Photographs

Tuesday, October 2 - Friday, October 26

Ken Hiratsuka was formally trained as a stone sculptor in his native Japan.Upon moving to New York in 1982, he immediately took inspiration from the early downtown street artists. Soon, along with Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat, he became a major force in the alternative art scene and helped to shift this movement from the periphery of the art world into its center.
Hiratsuka found his perfect canvas in the granite and bluestone sidewalk slabs scattered throughout New York. In the process of perfecting his “oneline” technique he carved nearly forty sidewalks, and in 2008 was commissioned by Goldman Properties at 25 Bond Street to create RIVER, a carved granite sidewalk - one hundred feet in length. Hiratsuka has exhibited internationally and has created public commissions in Japan, South Korea, Kenya, Brazil and Ibiza, among other sites.
Ken Hiratsuka has recently gained attention for his drawings, which retain the energy and pulse of his street work while conveying a refined visual sensitivity.

K R U T I C K + M A N O L I S  :  C O L O R A M A

Monday, October 2 - Friday, October 26

There is a long and intriguing history of artists who are also good friends that share notes, inspiration, achievements and even disappointments, through hands-on experience as well as critical conversations and observations about each other’s work.  For example, Picasso and Braque became great friends as they regularly compared opinions on the early exploration of geometric-based interpretations of shapes.  Artists Jill Krutick and J. Steven Manolis have this special connection, too, through their extensive and colorful history of working together as colleagues and friends during their successful careers in finance and research at Salomon Bros.  This relationship continued when both moved on from there to eventually pursue art full-time.
     K R U T I C K + M A N O L I S  :  C O L O R A M A is a celebration of lifelong friendship, a marker of their development as artists, and a portfolio of joyful abstract expressionist works that trumpet their unique artistic signatures.
