Toxic Victorian Beauty Rituals

Friday, October 26
7:00 PM

Visual presentation and discussion

Drop dead gorgeous perfectly describes the toxic beauty rituals and the must-have deadly fashions of the Victorian era. From belladonna eye drops to arsenic complexion wafers, join multi-disciplinary artist Alexis Palmer Karl in a discussion of the relentless pursuit of the Victorian ideal.
Alexis Palmer Karl is the founder and perfumer of artisanal fragrance company, Scent By Alexis, and co-founder and perfumer of House of Cherry Bomb. Karl is a regular lecturer on the cultural and historical relevance of fragrance, fashion and art at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and The Morbid Anatomy Museum. Karl teaches The Cult of Fashion and The Art of Scent at Pratt Institute and The School of Visual Arts. Her research on Victorian toxic beauty practices lead her to be the consulted expert on the subject for Bustle Magazine, New York Times: Women in The World, and Atlas Obscura.

Victorian fashion with a dark side is highly encouraged!
