Staged reading

It was in 1912 that former president Theodore Roosevelt headed an expedition to explore an uncharted river in the Amazon wilderness. He was expecting a grand adventure, “My last chance to be a boy!” It turned out to be the most harrowing episode in his storied career, an epic three-month-long struggle with the natural world that almost cost him his life.
Teddy and the River, written by Frederick Stroppel, is a three-character play focused on Teddy, his son Kermit, and the legendary Brazilian Colonel Candido Rondon. Allan Zeller will play the role of Teddy Roosevelt. He has appeared in several readings at the NAC, also directed by Mark Graham, including Strindberg’s Doll House and Shakespeare and the Heart’s Desire.
The play explores the eternal conflict between human ambition and the indifference of nature, and dramatizes the true story of how a grand and noble enterprise became a desperate race for survival.
