Away From The Wall

April 30 - June 16

Opening Reception: April 30,  6:00-8:00 PM

Two-dimensional painting and three-dimensional sculpture are created through distinct processes. One resides flat on the wall, the other freestanding. With so many variations over the last century there is a combining and blurring of media.
Away From the Wall incorporates the traditional wall attachment with structural components that move into space. Both elements support one another. As our spatial relationship with such works is reconfigured, the objects on view challenge our comprehension of how painting and sculpture exist today.
An exhibition of works by several artists demonstrate the variety of ways they approach the practice.

The 2017 Will Barnet Prize Winner: CRYSTAL W. M. CHAN

April 30 - May 25
Opening Reception: May 2, 6:00-8:00 PM

We are proud to present the work of Crystal W. M. Chan, the 2017 Will Barnet Prize winner. Born and raised in Macau, Crystal received her Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Arts from the School of Visual Arts. In addition to the NAC Barnet Prize she was also the recipient of the Macau Cultural Affairs Bureau Grant for Artistic and Cultural Study from 2015 - 2017.
“Nostalgia does not always cleanse the past. A certain kind of sadness remains adrift, violently disturbing. These emotional fragments are pieces that are difficult to put back in shape. Some things are very subtle and quiet, but remain after time.”  To address these sentiments, Crystal’s gestural paintings involve figures and bleak landscapes that are drawn with an expressive line and brushstrokes. She seeks to evoke emotions that resonate with haunting memories.
