FashionSpeak Fridays: Liberated Threads

Friday, April 6
7:00 PM

Conversation and book signing

From the civil rights and Black Power era of the 1960s through Anti-Apartheid activism in the 1980s and beyond, black women have used their clothing, hair, and style not simply as a fashion statement but as powerful tools of resistance.
Join Tanisha C. Ford, author of Liberated Threads: Black Women, Style, and the Global Politics of Soul, in exploring how black women's fashion choices became inspiring symbols of gender and political liberation, and how Soul Power sparked a global fashion phenomenon.
Tanisha C. Ford is an award-winning writer, cultural critic, and historian. Her writing has appeared in ELLE, The New Yorker, The New York Times, and Ebony. Liberated Threads won the Liberty Legacy Foundation award for Best Book on Civil Rights History in 2016. Dr. Ford currently lectures at the University of Delaware.

Liberated Fashion is highly encouraged! Books will be available for purchase.

THIS EVENT IS FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC. MUST RSVP: [email protected]
