We Were Strangers Once by Betsy Carter

Thursday, March 22
8:00 PM

Book reading, discussion, and signing

As a child of immigrants, Betsy Carter writes authoritatively of those who escaped Germany on the eve of World War II.  In We Were Strangers Once, a Jewish doctor flees his homeland for an uncertain future and finds solace among fellow immigrants in upper Manhattan. He is denied his right to practice medicine and works in a grocery store where he is labeled “Cheese Man.” He forges an unlikely alliance with a daughter of an Irish trolley driver.
Betsy Carter will engage in dialogue with Carol Ascher, a daughter of German Jewish refugees, who has published seven books, essays and stories on emigration and exile. She is a recipient of NY Foundation of the Arts and Pen/NEA short fiction awards. Carter is the author of three novels and a memoir, Nothing to Fall Back On. She is creator and editor of New York Women magazine and worked at Newsweek, Harper’s Bazaar, and Esquire.

THIS EVENT IS FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC. A RESERVATION IS NOT REQUIRED.
