Community and the Art of Social Engagement

Tuesday, February 13
8:00 PM

Visual presentation

Why do artists choose to engage with a social or political issue? This panel welcomes artists whose art and activism has received wide notice to explain the process behind such work. Some might wish art would avoid the challenges of the 'real world,' but our panelists discuss why aesthetic politics matter today.
Molly Gochman is a New York City-based experiential artist and activist. She created Red Sand Project as an artwork to raise awareness of human trafficking and modern-day slavery. Jill Sigman/thinkdance is an interdisciplinary artist whose work exists at the intersection of dance, visual art, and social practice. Working with “garbage” and “weeds”, Sigman helps us to re-see our environments and envision a future in which we reconnect with the natural world. Subway therapist Matthew "Levee" Chavez creates site-specific installations that encourage peaceful expression through anonymous catharsis on sticky notes in New York City Subways.
