Nathaniel Pousette-Dart and American Art

Painter, art writer, publisher and art director Nathaniel Pousette-Dart (1886-1965) championed American art during the interwar period, both in its regionalist and modernist forms.  A close colleague of prominent members of The National Arts Club, including Paul Manship, William Merritt Chase and Alfred Steiglitz, he featured Robert Henri in his series of books Distinguished American Artists.    
    Entrepreneurial in spirit, Pousette-Dart developed innovative avenues for art education that included early TV and radio talks, as well as home courses for studio education.  Ultimately, he encouraged a developing generation of abstract artists, including his son, Abstract Expressionist painter Richard Pousette-Dart, to celebrate their voices as uniquely American artists.      
    This presentation by art historian Charles H. Duncan will re-introduce Nathaniel Pousette-Dart as a colorful figure in the advancement of art in New York City, and be augmented by selected readings from the artist’s unpublished archives.
