Boy Erased: A Memoir of Identity,  Faith and Family
by Garrard Conley

Wednesday, February 7
8:00 PM

Book reading and signing

Garrard Conley will be discussing and reading from his book, Boy Erased. His incredibly moving and powerful memoir was on Oprah’s Best Memoirs List in 2016. Focus Features has adapted it into a major movie starring Russell Crowe, Nicole Kidman and Lucas Hedges due for release this year.
The only son of a Baptist pastor and deeply embedded in small-town Arkansas church life, Garrard Conley felt terrified and conflicted about his homosexuality. When Garrard was a college freshman, he was outed to his parents, and was forced to make a life-changing decision: either agree to attend a conversion therapy program that promised to “cure” him of homosexuality or risk losing family, friends and the God he had prayed to every day of his life. Through this church-supported program, he was supposed to emerge heterosexual and stronger in his faith for his brush with sin.
Come and hear about his harrowing journey, and how he found the strength to break out in search of his true self.
Garrard will be in conversation with Maud Newton, whose writing has appeared in The New York Times Magazine, Harper’s and many other publications. She received the 2009 Narrative Prize. Her book about ancestors and the stories we tell ourselves about them is forthcoming from Random House.

A reservation is recommended but not required. This event is free and open to the public.
