The Jeweled Flowers of John La Farge

Tuesday, January 23
8:00 PM

Lecture and visual presentation

In 1881, former New York State Governor Samuel Tilden commissioned the artist John La Farge to create a large grouping of stained-glass windows. With clients that included the Vanderbilts, La Farge was one of the most sought-after decorators of the day. The mansion window is an assortment of decorative images typical of La Farge's ornamental work. His windows scintillate with one-of-a-kind glass in opalescent tints and cast jewels. The window was moved to its present location in 1906, when the Tilden mansion was altered for its new owner, The National Arts Club. We will examine the window in detail, from its materials and construction to a comparison of other La Farge windows of similar design.
Julie L. Sloan is a stained-glass consultant, specializing in conservation studies, conservation management, and history. She was an adjunct professor at Columbia University, and has given lectures around the country. The author of Conservation of Stained Glass in America, she has written many articles on stained glass history and conservation.
