Editor as Writer:
Jonathan Galassi of Farrar, Straus & Giroux

Wednesday, January 10
8:00 PM

Lively conversation

All writers are editors, to some degree, but few editors are also distinguished writers. Jonathan Galassi, president and publisher of Farrar, Straus and Giroux (FSG) for more than 30 years, is also a major American poet and novelist—as well as a translator of works by Italian writers including Montale, Leopardi, and Primo Levi. Galassi converses with NAC Member David Masello about Galassi's life as an editor and writer, and how he has helped make FSG one of the industry’s most respected and influential book publishers of all genres.
How does a publishing house operate? What does a book editor do? How does Galassi determine what to publish? How does a book morph from manuscript to finished volume? Galassi speaks candidly, too, about his poetry and how it intersects with—or remains distinct from—his role as editor.
