A Tribute to Irving Petlin

October 30 - January 4

American artist Irving Petlin is renowned for his mastery of the pastel medium and his collaborations with other artists including Mark di Suvero and Leon Golub.  Engaging in multiple discourses - political, philosophical and psychological - Petlin’s work radiates with a mastery of line, color and light and is enhanced by a sense of myth and unlimited space. The National Arts Club exhibition will include the first showing of the artist's pastel series - Storms, After Redon.     
   The work of Irving Petlin can be found in the collections of MOMA. the Metropolitan Museum and the Centre Pompidou in Paris. Mr. Petlin is currently featured in the exhibition L’Art du Pastel de Degas à Redon at the Petit Palais in Paris.

Jose Luis Bustamante - The Power of the South Wind - Across Borders

Through November 25


The acclaimed Mexican artist, Jose Luis Bustamante, returns to The National Arts Club with an exhibition of new work inspired by his observation of the powerful migration of the south wind. Studying color and movement, Bustamante has created a body of work that captures the warm yet powerful elements of the physical world and emotional spaces.     
   Installing unique groupings of diptych, triptych and polyptych, the artist creates an environment of continuous flow and creative freedom. A master colorist, Bustamante’s power of communication is immediate and arresting and allows him to effortlessly combine his pictorial, cultural and political visions and views.

Lissa Rivera: Beautiful Boy

November 6 - 25


Photographer and curator Lissa Rivera presents “Beautiful Boy,” an investigation of the visual language of femininity that is deeply embedded in the DNA of our cultural perceptions. This award-winning project has been heralded by The New York Times and Harpers Bazaar and recently received the Magnum Photography Award for portraiture.   
   With her romantic partner as muse, Rivera explores the evolution of image culture in relationship to identity, sexuality, and gender. Rivera meticulously art directs each ethereal photograph, piecing together intricate costumes, settings, and concepts that interrogate the history of cinema and photography. By presenting her partner within the lineage of great beauties, Rivera re-contextualizes what is attractive and beautiful as well as the visual pleasures available to women.
