Shakespeare enjoys theatrical success, while seeking personal happiness in his somewhat complicated private life. Meanwhile, Queen Elizabeth I, strongly attracted to the young Earl of Essex, and afraid to lose him, though aware of his ambition, makes him commander of her army in Ireland.
1601 is the year when all the players in this game of love and power threaten to combust in a crisis of political treachery. In this play, as in history, Shakespeare and his players are drawn into an act of high treason, to which Shakespeare's personal feelings have led them, and from which he must strive to save them all.
This is the third play in Mary Jane Schaefer’s Shakespeare Trilogy, The Lives of Shakespeare. The first two plays of the trilogy were presented at The National Arts Club in 2012 and 2014.
