John Lockwood Kipling: 'Keeper of Images' in the 'Wonder House' Monday, September 18 8:00 PM / Illustrated lecture John Lockwood Kipling (1837-1911) has left a legacy in the fields of decorative arts and architecture. After a century of British influence, craft traditions had suffered, but Kipling travelled away from industrial Bombay to find and record these dying skills as part of village life. Reversing the influence of British exported goods and colonial taste, Kipling championed the revival of local historic crafts and design. In 1875 he was appointed Principal of the new Mayo School of Art. He is described, with his museum, as the ‘Keeper of Images’ in the ‘Wonder House’, by his son Rudyard in the novel Kim (1904). Susan Weber, Professor at the Bard Graduate Center: Decorative Arts, Design History, Material Culture, will enrich us with the world of John Kipling and share the comprehensive knowledge on his rich legacy.
