Classic Black Then and Now:
Conversation with Dance Theatre of Harlem’s Virginia Johnson

Tuesday, April 11
8:00 PM

Virginia Johnson, a classically-trained ballet dancer, was among the first company members hired by Arthur Mitchell when he began the Dance Theatre of Harlem (DTH) in 1969, and went on to become an internationally recognized ballerina. Upon retirement, she founded and became editor of Pointe magazine. When DTH was brought back to life five years ago, the board asked her to become the new Artistic Director.
Ms. Johnson will talk about her position 50 years ago as a black dancer in a white ballet world and what strides black dancers have made today.  She believes that none of the arts can ignore the issues of diversity,  equality and inclusion, issues that are still with us today. She will also discuss her plans for the newly invigorated DTH.
The evening will include a lecture, film presentation, and a Q&A with dancers from DTH participating in the discussion.
