Being John Malkovich

Monday, April 10
7:30 PM

The Film Committee’s Dream Factory Festival continues with Being John Malkovich, a 1999 American fantasy-comedy film directed by Spike Jonze and written by Charlie Kaufman, both making their feature film debut. The film stars John Cusack, Cameron Diaz, and Catherine Keener, with John Malkovich and Charlie Sheen as themselves. The film follows a puppeteer who finds a portal that leads into Malkovich's mind.  The film was nominated in three categories at the 72nd Academy Awards: Best Director for Jonze, Best Original Screenplay for Kaufman and Best Supporting Actress for Keener.
Critic Roger Ebert said, "What an endlessly inventive movie this is! Charlie Kaufman, the writer of Being John Malkovich, supplies a stream of dazzling inventions, twists and wicked paradoxes. And the director, Spike Jonze, doesn't pounce on each one like fresh prey, but unveils it slyly, as if there's more where that came from. The movie has ideas enough for half a dozen films, but Jonze and his cast handle them so surely that we never feel hard-pressed."
Our discussant will be Caroline Hagood, who earned her PhD from Fordham and wrote her thesis on female poets redreaming male film-makers’ dreams. Caroline has produced two books of poetry, numerous articles on film, and two grandchildren.
