Portrait of Roland Barthes

Thursday, March 9
6:30 PM

The Cocktail Français is delighted to welcome Madame Chantal Thomas, a French writer, who has published nineteen works, including essays on the Marquis de Sade, Casanova, and Marie Antoinette. For her 2002 novel, Les Adieux à la Reine (Farewell, My Queen), which was made into a very successful movie, she was awarded the prestigious Prix Femina. Madame Thomas will present her latest book, Portrait of Roland Barthes, a French literary theorist, philosopher, linguist, and critic which includes selected centuries of French history. She will also share stories from her personal relationship with Barthes.
Although Barthes wrote about esoteric subjects, Madame Thomas renders his concepts accessible and down-to-earth with a charming wit and humor.
Chantal Thomas is currently the director of research at the French National Centre for Scientific Research.

For NAC members only: Following the program, join us for a prix-fixe  dinner at the “French Table.”  Be sure to reserve with the dining room at (212) 477-2389 or [email protected].
