WILL BARNET - The Abstract Works: A Language of Forms

January 9 - February 4

Opening Reception:
January 12, 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM

“In the late 1940s I began looking for abstract forms that symbolized the figures I wanted to represent. I concentrated on eliminating illusional representation in favor of a formal approach that gave equal attention to positive and negative space. It was an intense period of searching which led to radical aesthetic solutions.”  - Will Barnet
From the 1940s to the 1960s Will Barnet was a rigorous abstractionist. Shunning the raw painterly terms of Abstract Expressionism, Barnet found a language of forms in the substance and forces he felt in nature. Barnet also turned to American Indian art where he discovered imagery abstracted from natural forms that gave sophisticated expression to emotions. Splendidly assimilating these sources, he created in a short period of time a body of work that is unique in its daring, elegance and monumentality.
On view will be over 20 prints and drawings that illuminate the true nature of Barnet’s accomplishments.

OUTSIDE THE LINES: The Fourth Annual NAC Drawing Invitational

January 9 - March 4

Opening Reception:
January 10, 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM

Drawings have for centuries offered viewers the most immediate and intimate glimpse of an artist’s process and vision. More than paintings, drawings make us constantly aware of the physical act of their making. Since the early 20th century artists have made the argument that drawings can possess inherent qualities that make them a major art form in their own right. Today, through the use of unconventional media, artists have energized the force and impact of line.
The Annual NAC Drawing Invitational brings together an eclectic group of artists who continue to challenge the concept of drawing to create powerful expressions through line. Included are works by Elsa Mora, Terry Winters, Kendall Shaw and Jimmy Wright.

HOT OFF THE PRESSES/Contemporary Prints

January 9 - February 4

Opening Reception:
January 10, 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM

There has been a huge increase in printmaking since the mid-20th century, helped by a number of innovated techniques including computer-generated prints. Hot Off The Presses is a tiny taste of prints published this year. This exhibit represents but a smattering of local presses that have proliferated over the country. Prints from a few New York-based presses were selected for this exhibition, including The Lower East Side Printshop, VanDeb Editions, Kayrock, Jennifer Melby Editions, Solo Press, Planthouse, Jungle Press, Aspinwall Editions and the Wassaic Project Print Shop. These prints represent a variety of techniques, from monotypes to etchings with thread. Among the artists are James Siena, Judith Linhares, Phillip Taffe, Deborah Freedman, Javier Barrera, Katherine Bradford,  Michael Hambouz and Julie Heffernan.
