Don’t Let My Baby Do Rodeo
by Boris Fishman

Boris Fishman’s first novel,
A Replacement Life
which he presented to a packed house at The National Arts Club on December 18, 2014, was hailed everywhere from the award circuit to the front cover of
The New York Times Book Review,
which asked: “Is there room in American fiction for another brilliant young émigré writer? There had better be, because here he is.” Join Boris for a return appearance on behalf of his second novel,
Don’t Let My Baby Do Rodeo.
Russian immigrants Maya and Alex Rubin live lives of quiet suburban desperation until infertility leads them to adopt Max, a mysterious boy from Montana who, at age eight, begins acting feral. Looking for answers, the Rubins set out for Montana, their first trip to the American West. But it’s Maya, the adoptive mother, who is forever changed by her belated encounter with her adopted country, resulting in seismic consequences for herself and her family.
Rodeo
is a moving, often hilarious meditation on inheritance and what exactly it means to belong, but Boris’s discussion will take in a broader question, perhaps never more relevant than in today’s shifting gender landscape: How do women reconcile who they are with whom the world wants them to be, both in this culture and others?
